Whit Whitlow Memorial Scholarship

GAPS contributes to the education of a deserving student by awarding the Whit Whitlow Memorial Scholarship to one handpicked recipient each year. Help us help a student in your life by nominating a qualified individual for this great opportunity!

The Whit Whitlow Memorial Scholarship fund was established by GAPS as a tribute to Whit Whitlow, who was a pioneer in the formation of our organization and a steadfast supporter throughout his life. A total of eighteen scholarships have been awarded since the fund's inception in 1998.

We present the $1,000 scholarship to the selected nominee at the GAPS Annual Conference.

GAPS always invites members and non-members alike to contribute to the Whit Whitlow Memorial Scholarship fund, and you can make a donation here. Please note that GAPS reserves the right to move donated money into a general fund as seen fit.

Nomination Process

If you are a GAPS member, plan to join by the scholarship deadline, are employed by a member or have a family member currently in GAPS, we invite you to nominate a student by completing the GAPS Scholarship Nomination Package, which is sent to all members via email, and emailing it with supporting documents to gaps@gapstoday.org. If you are not currently a GAPS member yourself but otherwise qualify to nominate a student and, as such, did not receive this email, please contact us to receive a copy of the Nomination Package.

The criteria for consideration as a nominee are:

  1. Must provide proof of a 3.0 GPA/B average or better.
  2. Must be a current Georgia resident.
  3. Must be actively involved in school and/or community organizations.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior or actively enrolled in college.
  5. Must be nominated by a sponsor who is a current GAPS member, an employee of a current GAPS member or a family member of a current GAPS member. The sponsor must provide a brief overview (250 words typed maximum) of the nominee's circumstances and need.
  6. Must provide proof of current and active attendance in college or acceptance to a college/university if not already enrolled.
  7. Must personally write and provide a brief statement (250 words typed maximum) describing personal goals and aspirations.

The scholarship will be awarded based on need, academic qualifications, school/community involvement and the demonstration of a high level of leadership.
